Actor Cary Elwes has responded to a recent report confirming that numerous potential pitches for a “Princess Bride” remake have been heard by Sony Pictures.
Elwes, who served as the male lead Westley in the Rob Reiner-directed 1987 fantasy-adventure tale, said on Twitter “There’s a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It would be a pity to damage this one.”
The comment comes after a Variety profile on legendary TV producer Norman Lear this week included a quote by Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra who said: “We have so many people coming to us saying, ‘we want to remake this show or that show’. Very famous people whose names I won’t use, but they want to redo ‘The Princess Bride’.”
That quickly led to claims a full-on remake of the original (which Lear produced) was in the works, even though there’s zero indication of that and Vinciquerra would be highly unlikely to discuss it were a deal in the works.
“Princess Bride” received a Blu-ray criterion release late last year.
